What If We Could Surf Without Waves?

Every surfer knows this frustration: waves never come when you need them. No good spots nearby. No time. Wrong conditions.

What if you could “surf on land”? Not just a skateboard that looks like a surfboard. No. Real carving sensation, authentic rail-to-rail, total freedom of movement.

That’s exactly what Frédéric Badino thought three years ago. And it became O’Board—a revolutionary surfskate that reimagines riding on asphalt.

Who Is Frédéric Badino?

Frederic Badino

Frédéric Badino is no ordinary entrepreneur. At 48, hailing from Martigues in southern France, he straddles two worlds: aerospace technician by day, gliding enthusiast the rest of the time.

The Surfer’s Frustration

The southern accent echoes through skate parks, cicadas sing, the Mediterranean coast stretches endlessly—everything is there, except one thing: waves.

That’s the real challenge. How do you recreate that surf feeling year-round when the elements refuse to cooperate? The ocean and mountains aren’t accessible to everyone, let alone the good breaks.

Frédéric: Passion + Perseverance

But Frédéric isn’t just a frustrated surfer. He’s a man with a rare gift: understanding how things work and how to make them better.

His aerospace background gives him a pragmatic approach. His years gliding give him intuition.

A lifelong surfer, passionate skater, he embodies an uncommon profile: the innovator who solves his own problems. No corporate structure. No big budget. Just perseverance and an idea that won’t let go.

With that spirit, he started developing O’Board.

The Genesis: A Simple Idea, Complex Execution

Three years ago, Frédéric had a vision: create a real home trainer for surfers.

The problem was crystal clear. You can’t surf every day—especially in the Mediterranean.

“Look, I wanted to find a way to improve at surfing even when the ocean won’t cooperate,” Frédéric explains..

“A way to keep that carving feeling alive year-round, anytime, anywhere.“

Not just your typical surfskate. Something completely new.

“The idea was to recreate that surf feeling out of the water. Carving, pumping, that freedom of movement—but on land, without mechanical limits.”

The Challenge: Reinventing the Surfskate

Existing surfskates had obvious limitations: pitch lockdown, restricted pivots, complicated mechanics requiring specific technique (ineffective wiggling). Most importantly, they never truly delivered that wave carving sensation.

Frédéric attacked the problem differently.

The Patented and Certified Central Wheel

For months, he iterated through prototypes to engineer an articulated central wheel system that would translate every movement into fluid curves—exactly like a wave.

The result? A patented system (INPI) that delivers:

  • Zero pitch lockdown – Lean however you want
  • Unlimited pivots – Turn without constraints
  • No mechanical jamming – Pure carving
  • Classic surfskate dynamics – With real wave sensation

“The first tests were insane”, se souvient Frédéric.

“Right away, I knew we had something real. This wasn’t a gimmick—this was serious. The feeling was there.”

Early feedback

Starting July 2024, Frédéric started showing his invention around, and everything clicked during an innovation competition at Airbus, his employer. The reaction was unanimous.

“Everyone told me the same thing: this isn’t a surfskate, it’s a new discipline. You’ve got something special, Fred,” Frédéric explains.

“That was exactly my goal. Create something new, not an improved copy.”

From Solo Project to Team Adventure

Since January 2026, Frédéric has built a professional team. The mission: create a real structure in France and the USA.

This is no longer a garage startup. This is a project taking serious shape.

What Makes O’Board Unique?

1. Breakthrough Innovation

O’Board doesn’t improve the surfskate. It reinvents it. The patented central wheel transforms every movement into fluid carving—exactly like a wave. No surfskate on the market does this.

2. Accessibility + Performance

  • Estimated retail price: $250-275 USD
  • Simple manufacturing: minimal parts, lightweight trucks
  • Accessible to everyone: from beginners to expert riders

The Market: Perfect Timing

Surfskating is booming. Riders are hungry for innovation and accessibility. O’Board arrives at exactly the right moment.

The target market is broad: surfers, skaters, snow/foil/kite riders, families.

Playgrounds are everywhere: skate parks, pump tracks, waterfronts, bike paths.

Frédéric’s projection: 200 → 500 → 1,000 units within 3 years.

Passion as the Driving Force

What strikes you about Frédéric isn’t business savvy. It’s a mission.

“I want to share a new riding experience that’s fun, accessible, and innovative,” he says simply. “Something born from the passion of a former skater and surfer. You don’t have to look far—it’s in the sensation itself.”

His vision? Build a community around a new discipline, rooted in real values:

  • Fun – No overthinking
  • Freedom – No limits
  • Community – Real connection

Not Another Standard Surfskate. Something Completely Different.

“The idea was to recreate authentic surf sensations out of the water,” he continues. “The carving, the pumping, that freedom of movement—but on land, without mechanical constraints. That’s when I started developing prototypes.”

The challenge was massive. Existing surfskates had limitations: pitch lockdown, restricted pivots, complicated mechanics requiring specific technique (that infamous ineffective wiggle). And most importantly, they never truly delivered that wave carving feeling.

Frédéric approached it differently.
